Chinese interest Increasing in South Asia

China’s desperation in seeking help from Nepal to secure higher status if not membership of the SAARC and also having good relationship with India. However, its PLA has not reconciled with this development. While the government seeks to continue and enhance its economic partnership with India, the PLA is allegedly intruding India’s territory regularly.

It was intriguing that when president Xi was on a visit to India last year, there were reports of PLA’s intrusions into the Indian side. It appears that China wishes to continue its warm relations with Pakistan and also have improved relations with India. But maintaining this balance is really a tightrope walk for China. Perhaps, India wants China to rein in Pakistan but China prefers to keep Pakistan and India at loggerheads for its own benefit.

China Keen to be SAARC Member

With just a few days remaining for starting 18th SAARC Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, China expressed interest to work up with SAARC nations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying told a media briefing  "We value the role played by SAARC and stand ready to elevate our partnership with it so that together we can play a greater role and contribute constructively to the region".

A joint secretarial-level meeting to set the agenda for the regional meet which will discuss on bringing China in the south Asian club. Though experts arugue that China, an observer of SAARC, should not be compared to other observers as the country shares its border with five SAARC member countries and enjoys deep ties with them.

Meanwhile, SAARC could benefit from China's rapid economic growth and a role it could play in linking SAARC with Asean and Central and East Asia Saarc can occupy a significant position in China's foreign policy which could be helpful in overcoming strained India-Pakistan relations and economic disparities

The step could provide a huge opportunity and an ideal incentive for China-Saarc cooperation in the future and China can play good role for overall development too.

The 18th SAARC Summit is going to be held in Nepal's Capital city, Kathmandu from November 26, 2014.
